TWENTY - 'JOHN, STEWARD ET AL.'
Information very kindly supplied by Mr. Gregory Lauder-Frost, professional genealogist:
'John Talmashe (one of several spellings of this surname over the centures) held, in the reign of King Edward III (1327-1377), the manor of Bentley, Suffolk, from the Crown, by knight's service. At the same time, Catherine Talmashe, presumed to be his mother, held half a knight's fee in Bentley, 'in capite' (i.e: direct from the Crown). This John eventually took the Black Cross [Templar?], and his arms were placed in York Minster.
Refer: "The Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies of England, Ireland, and Scotland" by Messrs.John and John Bernard Burke, 2nd edition, London, 1841, page 528.
John's daughter Marian married a John Steward, the first of his family to settle in Norfolk. These Stewards came from Scotland (via France) and are the same as the Royal Family of Stuart (originally Steward, then Stewart. Stuart is the French spelling). From John Steward and Marian Talmarshe or Tollemache descended Oliver Cromwell's mother, whose maiden name was Steward.'
Notes to myself:
- Cromwell, - see 'Ghosts2 or 3' & Elizabeth Tollemarche (Duchess of Lauderdale/Countess of Dysart).
- France, Scotland, England... crossovers.
