FIVE - 'HOTEL BRIT(T)AN(N)YA'
"You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"
Notes extracted from ye olde 'Tollemache Ghosts' websyte and other sources, Autumn 2004 & 2005:
Repetition - Tollemaches came over to England with Normans - based Ipswich, Cheshire, Acomb (Yorks), Ham House, Hanby Hall (Lincs), etc.
Sir Lionel (1600s - Husband of Duchess) - went to see a Parisian doctor cos of his poisoning (poisson? - no connection, yet...) - died.
William Tollemarche (one of the Duchess's sons) got into trouble in Paris. The Duchess's sister/half sister/cousin (see 'The Weaker Vessel' - Antonia Fraser) went over to save him. Believe she 'parleyed' reasonable French.
Earl (afterwards Duke) of Lauderdale (John Maitland) 's first wife divorced him because of his affair with Elizabeth Tollemarche (née Murray - Countess of Dysart). He gave her his family heirloom (much to the annoyance of the new Duchess) and she went to Paris.
The failed attack on Camaret bay near Brest (Brittany) was lead by Lieutenant (Thomas c. 1651-1694) Tollemarche.
Denys Tollemache (born 1915), while at Cambridge, disappeared with two friend in his bi-plane, trying to get to China. Only got as far as Paris where they crashed into a field of Brussel Sprouts, in the fog. He walked around Paris in a Bowler Hat and Jodhpurs trying to sell the wreckage for scrap. He did get his degree - in history. His thesis was on Napoleon Boneparte (sic.). Later, when flying down (again in his own plane) from London to Nice in France with my (Susan's) mother after their secret civil wedding in Chelsea (April 1939) for their church wedding, he followed the railway line and if a cloud obscured the tracks, he would swoop down to get his bearings, checking with the OS map spread out on his knees - or he would get my mother to read the name on a station along the platform as they flew past - before climbing skywards again."
