Marlborough's Wars 1694-1712
A - Notes
This series of maps relates to Marlborough's campaigns in the War of the Spanish Succession. The series was printed c. 1745 in Tindal's Continuation of Rapin's History of England. All are copper plate engraved by J. Basire. Printed dimensions are approx 15 x 18 in (38 x 46 cm); paper dimensions approx 15 3/4 x 20 3/8 in (40 x 52 cm). All are in generally excellent condition with only slight discolouration along the centre fold, occasional foxing and water marks. They provide a contemporary view of the campaigns, sieges and fortifications, and are of interest to historians, war gamers, engineers and others. These maps are seldom available in this condition and would be a unique addition to any militaria collection. They are outstanding works of the engraver's art in their own right, and properly framed are highly decorative.

"Plan of the Attack of Camaret Bay" (June 1694): showing the coast of Brittany and the harbour of Brest. A very fine plan of a naval operation showing ship and shore battery positions with two large ornamental cartouches, one containing an explanatory key. The operation was an unsuccessful British descent on Brest, repulsed by the French with the death of the British land force commander, TOLLEMARCHE (sic). The French defence was directed by Vauban himself. Quite clean, little foxing, small water stains left edge & lower centre.

Scottish Families
Professional genealogist Gregory Lauder-Frost has built up an extensive database, entitled Scottish Families, some of which are traced down to the present day. Currently with over 27,000 individuals, including extensive notes and references, work on this has been continuing for over five years. It is...
"Impressive and daunting - money well spent."
Wyn Evans, Houston, Texas.
"Brilliant!"
Viscount Maitland, Master of Lauderdale, London.
This data-base is essential for serious researchers of Scottish genealogy. Everyone in this database is in some way connected to everyone else, either by blood, marriage, or direct or indirect descent. There are, for instance, many descendants of Robert the Bruce and other Scots of royal blood of that period, and many descendants of the Plantagenets. Interested parties should not be deterred by this as thousands of quite ordinary people can often trace their families back to the aristocracy in Scotland. The decreasing population as each century is covered, and the endless intermarriage, makes all things possible. Some families are traceable from very early on until the 20th century. Also, most entries will have details of sources. If they are not in the notes for the individual they will be at the earliest ancestor of that family. Mr. Lauder-Frost is happy to answer all queries by Email from purchasers.

Designer: Tom Stuart-Smith
Sponsor: Laurent Perrier/Harpers & Queen
Contractor: Waterers Landscapes
Whilst the use of natural stone in the garden is legendary, never has its popularity been greater than today. And its appeal is set to widen further following the impressive role this timeless and practical material has played in the scheme of the Laurent-Perrier Harpers & Queen Garden – voted Best In Show at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. Burlington’s natural stone also featured in the Silver Gilt Flora medal winning garden of Merrill Lynch.
Burlington slate complements this award-winning garden
The third garden that Tom Stuart-Smith has designed for Laurent-Perrier and Harpers & Queen at Chelsea, this year’s creation was a contemporary garden that set out to explore the contrast between architectural minimalism and natural diversity: the former architectural detailing being brought out in the form of a slate wall created out of thousands of small pieces of Burlington Broughton Moor riven slate layered horizontally to give a textural richness.
Set within the context of a woodland grove, the sculptural element of the slate wall was extended at right angles, having been cleverly flipped over within the Tom Stuart-Smith design, to form a terrace and lily pool in the same Burlington material but with a flamed finish. The incision that the lily pool creates by being cut into the slate terrace has been repeated, on a smaller scale, as a smooth recess in the slate wall (the right size for a bottle of champagne and accompanying glasses!).
Designed to have a purity and clarity of conception, the planting within the garden exuded a freshness and natural woodland character. Made up of distinct layers, one of the main attractions of the Laurent-Perrier/Harpers & Queen garden was the multi-stemmed Cornus Kousa that was brought into flower early for the show and which formed a stunning canopy over the entire garden area.
Represented within the Merrill Lynch garden designed by Xa Tollemarche (sic) and Jon Kellett was Burlington’s natural stone in Elterwater Green. Created to show the classical formula of harmony and beauty through the special relationship between the part and its whole using The Golden Mean – a principle of geometry dating back to the fifth century BC – the garden featured selected walling, monoliths and turned vases in the pale green Burlington stone. The same material with a riven finish was used to create seating that featured curved fronts and backs.
