EAT FOOD HERE
(and remember to tell them about 'gardneronline')

This section of the site is intended to be a fairly non-judgemental restaurant guide
for potential punters. The area most visited by our team is Brighton & Hove (UK),
but other places such as: London, Edinburgh & the Home Counties are
covered in the 'Rest of UK' section. As well as this, we have reviewed a
number of restaurants in France, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Berlin.

MORE BRIGHTON & HOVE REST OF UK FRANCE AMSTERDAM, BARCELONA & BERLIN

It does not cost to have your restaurant included in this guide. However,
the reviewers would really appreciate a free meal from time to time.
Note: Actual prices may vary from those shown.

BRIGHTON & HOVE (UK)
    E-KAGEN SUSHI & NOODLE BAR:
  • This is one of our favourite restaurants in the area. It is simple and relatively understated ("like a canteen" - LBG), but the food is of a high standard, and freshly produced. There is an exciting view, overlooking the bustling Sydney Street in the 'Bohemian' North Laine area of Brighton. It used to be Yum-Yum's Noodle Bar - run by the oriental supermarket, which is downstairs.
As the name suggests, the restaurant delivers Noodle and Sushi dishes - amongst others. The good thing is that it's not too fussy; in other words, you get a good plateful of traditional Japanese food, which is filling whilst also being tasty and attractive. Check it out!

LBG says: The new noodle bar is just as good now, maybe even better! It is run by Japanese people and they do really good delicious Dumplings. When she ate there the pastry was done to absolute perfection. You can get a set meal for £7. The only downside is that there is NO Smoking.
    23, Sydney Street, Brighton. 01273-687068.
    CHINA CHINA:
  • We like this one. Great bubbly, fast-food atmosphere. Great service, good Express meals, unlimited tea refills and very economical (price-wise) for the amount of food that you get. With roasted chickens and ducks in the front window, this place seems to be straight out of the Soho district of London. It is mainly patronised by Chinese - which is a good sign, I hear. China China is always busy, but has plenty of seating and very helpful staff. There are plenty of Pork, Chicken, Beef and Duck express meals - as well as some Seafood dishes, such as Baby Octopus. The lack of Tofu dishes can be rectified by asking whether they can make something up specially, for you. The restaurant is licensed, but you could also try the sweet Chrysanthemum Tea. Be adventurous with Soups and Starters, expect close proximity to other customers; but above all, check out the background music!
Verdict: Very economical - about £4.50 a main. Food is freshly prepared.
    33, Preston Street, Brighton. 01273-328028.
    BALI BRASSERIE:
  • We won't be going back here again; purely because of the attitude of the staff. The restaurant serves good Indonesian and Malaysian food in a luxurious, almost 'ex-pat' setting - reminiscent of some kind of Asian 'Empire' hotel. Here, it appears to be run by Dutch people, who don't seem to care too much about customer opinion/satisfaction. On the food side of things - a great buffet is available most nights (depending on the volume of customers). There is also an 'A la Carte' menu, with Starters, Main Courses, etc. The restaurant is licensed, and serves Tea - but not 'Green' Tea. The Starters we had were fine, but we made the mistake of mentioning to the waiter that the Coconut Curry affairs that we had for Main were a little too salty for our liking - Bad Move! This meant that when it came to dessert, LBG was awarded a free piece of used chewing gum, which was stuck to the bowl of her Lychees and Cream (she had actually asked not to have cream in the first place).
Apart from all this, the beer was tasty, and the restaurant is unusual in that it occupies half of the ground floor of an apartment block on Hove seafront. The restaurant (?) caters for parties/functions and also has a separate licensed bar. It is quite expensive.
LBG says: "I thought that all Dutch people spoke English until we encountered the waiting staff at this restaurant - who appear to have 'selective' comprehension of the English language."
Kingsway Court, Queens Gardens, Hove. 01273-323810.
    SING-LI FISH BAR:
  • 'No chip - you wait!'
Ginge describes this take-away restaurant near Brighton Station, as having - "the best fish and chips in town!"
    'Monday close.'
    39, Guildford Road, Brighton. 01273-328686.
    PIZZA HUT:
  • We enjoyed dropping in for a coffee after browsing through the books at 'Borders', across the road. Staff helpful. Good evening stopoff.
    2, Dyke Road, Brighton. 01273-328666.
    MOSHI MOSHI:
  • Declared 'one of the 10 best places to eat out in Britain' by 'the Independent', Moshi Moshi is a palace of Sushi delights! From set meals to Japanese Tapas, from Fish to Vegetarian (including Tofu), the food is of a high quality and expertly freshly prepared in front of you. The restaurant has a range of fine wines, beers and cocktails, as well as soft drinks and teas.
'Britain's original conveyor-belt sushi bar' continuously delivers elegantly presented dishes around the restaurant, making your mouth water as they pass you. The staff are very helpful, friendly and attentive; and make eating here a pleasure. It is, naturally, quite expensive (expect to pay at least £10 per head), but an excellent way to treat yourself and friends.
Some of the more unusual dishes include items such as: Sea Urchin, Red Snapper, Octopus and Eel. Desserts are available and we recommend the 3-ball 'Mochi', the Green Tea Brulée or the Almond Milk - pure heaven!
The 'Japanese Autumn' cocktail is our favourite drink, containing: Sake, Grenadine and Cranberry Juice - Yum!
The architectural design of Moshi Moshi is such that large sliding-doors can be opened up to create an open-air restaurant on hot days. There is seating outside and also two types of seating inside. You can perch at the conveyor-belt counters (great!) or at more formal tables (more expensive after 19.00hrs - with a different menu). Booking is advised for these tables in the evening. The only downpoint is the limited toilet facilities.
Moshi Moshi has a strict No Smoking policy. Take-Away/Delivery is available. Closed Mondays.
Opticon, Bartholomew Square (The Lanes), Brighton. 01273-719195/719196. www.moshimoshi.co.uk
    CAFFÉ NERO:
  • Over-priced, but tasty packaged food. Sandwiches, pastries and pasta (heated in a microwave). Over- priced, but very tasty drinks - large variety of coffees. Good for a quick caffeine and glucose hit, but perhaps not quite as special as it thinks it is. Loyalty card available - 10th coffee free.
Located conveniently close to main shopping area.
208, Western Road, Brighton. 01273-771498. Also in Bond Street (North Laine) & Church Road, Hove.
    TONG'S:
  • Specialising in Cantonese and Peking Take-Away, Tong's is cheap and cheerful. You get a lot of food for not much money. Quality-wise it is OK. While you wait (which you won't have to do for very long!) you can watch Satellite/Cable TV and browse the 'News of the World'/'The Sun' to keep yourself updated on current 'affairs'! Mr. Tong is very friendly and helpful and always remembers a face.
Chicken Chop Suey and Rice - £4.50, Singapore Rice Noodles - £3.80, Hot and Sour Soup - £1.60. Free Prawn Crackers!
Opening times: 17.00-00.00 every day, but closed on Tuesday.
    40, Waterloo Street, Hove. 01273-729622.
    ISTANBUL BARBEQUE:
  • Not just a kebab shop! Special of the Day is £5.90, for a meat-dish casserole, with rice, freshly cooked bread and Turkish Tea. Also: Kebabs of many varieties, steaks, burgers, fish, pizza, chicken, chips, humous, and so on. Not badly priced. Nice people. Special Offers. Eat-in or Take-away. I am also rather partial to the 'Turkish Pizzas' available here. Whilst being smaller than normal pizzas, they are also cheaper (from £2.50) and are possibly more delicious!
    125, Western Road, Brighton. 01273-326699/206649.
    SING-TONG THAI (at 'The Pond'):
  • Upstairs at 'The Pond' public house in Brighton, you will find the cozy Sing-Tong restaurant. It was lucky that we had booked a table, because quite a few people were being turned away. This shows how popular this place is, and we weren't surprised, the food was great! There is quite a varied menu, including some unusual dishes such as: 'Wings of Love', 'Weeping Tiger' and 'Pattaya Paradise' - great!! The menu includes a broad Veggie, Poultry and Seafood selection; as well as some meat. Tofu is in abundance! Drinks can be ordered from the pub downstairs, or you can have mugs of Jasmine Tea or Minerals. All of this is reasonably priced and the service is efficient and friendly. Thai snacks are also available at the bar downstairs.
    Verdict: Recommended!
    Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 18.00-22.30.
    49, Gloucester Road, Brighton. 01273-621400.
    MUANG THAI:
  • Very ambient atmosphere, with recordings of classical Thai piano music, and decorated internally and externally with helpings of 'oriental paraphernalia'. The food here is delicious, and quite well priced. Both vegi and meat options are covered, and as I remember we had - yes, you guessed it! - Green Tea! This was re-filled as necessary. We enjoyed this meal and found it be 'probably' the best Thai eatery in Brighton.
    Verdict: Well-priced, beautifully-presented, quality food.
    77, St. James's Street, Brighton. 01273-605223.
    ALL IN ONE:
  • All in One is a fast-food takeaway/delivery establishment. As the name implies, they specialise in a multitude of styles including: Pizza, Burgers, Kebabs, Chicken, Fish and Chips, and more. We've only tried the Pizza (and Garlic Bread), but we have it on good recommendation that the other dishes are fine too. Scott says that All in One serve the best chips in town!
The Pizzas have 12" bases, and the limited toppings are mostly quite meaty unless you go for the 'create your own' option. You can also order Garlic Bread (basically a 12" pizza base) with various toppings - check it out - better value at around £5 rather than £7!
The service here is efficient and there are also special deals for combinations such as: Pizza, Garlic Bread, Coleslaw and Drink. You can buy Soft Drinks, Turkish Delight and other sweet foods here.
Call All in One for their latest prices, or check their website at www.brighton-pizza.co.uk
1, Park Road, Coldean, Brighton. 01273-670027.
    AL ROUCHE:
  • At first glance, it was hard to tell what to expect from this place. It looked good through the window, and the menu set our juices flowing - but sometimes looks are deceiving...
There were a few other customers in the restaurant when we entered, and a few tables and some balloons had been set aside for a birthday party. The overall atmosphere was buoyant, without being over-busy! The menu in the window had dragged us in, and yes, it was definitely worth it. We had a great time at Al Rouche - happy and friendly staff, great Arabic music, a cosy surrounding, and complimentary pickled foods, tea and coffee!
The menu is Lebanese, and includes a wide variety of starters, such as Foul, Humous etc. Main courses are mostly Lamb, Chicken and Fish, and take the form of Casseroles, Grilled meats/fish, Meatballs and so forth (around £7.50 each, incl. rice and/or salad). Alternatively you could plump for a mixed Vege or Meat Meze (selection of items from the menu) for £14.95 per person for two. Desserts are £2.95, and include: Baklawa, Ice Cream, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Apple Pie etc. Al Rouche have a choice of Minerals, Beers, Wines and other alcohol; and like I said - we were offered free Mint tea/Arabic coffee - great!!
    Verdict: Highly recommended!
    44, Preston Street, Brighton. 01273-734810.
    RYELIGHT ORIENTAL SUPERMARKET:
  • Why not visit Ryelight? - for all your oriental food and cooking needs!
Fresh and packaged foods, Vegetables, Rice, Sweets, Frozen and refrigerated goods, Drinks etc.
    LBG says: I recommend it!
    48, Preston Street, Brighton. 01273-734954.
    GOOD FRIENDS:
  • Think 'China China' crossed with 'Sun Bo Seng' and you're roughly there. Good Friends has a great atmosphere. The environment is very clean and bright, and has been re-painted recently (Jan.03). Staff are helpful, efficient and of course - friendly! This is our favourite Chinese restaurant in town.
We've eaten here plenty of times and know that you always get a good deal. The first time, LBG had the fruity 'Szechuan Tofu with Rice' - Yum! I had the Seafood Noodles, which came with unusual-looking shapes of squid, octopus etc. Mmmm... More recently I've chosen 'Pork and Rice' style fare. We also usually go for the Green Tea, but Good Friends is a licensed restaurant, with the regular range of alcoholic drinks etc.
There is a standard menu and an Express Menu (most main courses around £4.20 including rice/noodles - only available until 19.00 hrs.), and you can choose from either or both. 10% service charge is added to your bill.
Verdict: Good deals - great meals! We go here a lot.
    24, Preston Street, Brighton. 01273-327814.
    STANMER RESTAURANT AND TEA ROOMS:
  • Apart from being in a great setting - nestled against some spectacular South Downs scenery - Stanmer Tea Rooms do some great breakfasts too! These can be Vege. or Meaty, and are reasonably priced. You order from the counter, collect your drinks (wide range) and find a table - inside or out. The Restaurant has lovely gardens and is a good stop for hikers, bikers or drivers. The interior houses statues of the Buddha, seated side-by-side with more usual country ornaments.
Main meals, Puddings and Cakes are also available, as is plenty of reading material. A light breakfast costs from £3.50 (incl. Coffee/Tea).
Stanmer Store, Stanmer Village, Stanmer Park, Brighton. 01273-604041.
    SOM JAI:
  • Good cheap Thai food. Not the usual overdone Thai restaurant formalities. Cheery canteen-like feel. Plenty of variety on the menu and at good prices too. Curries, Soups, Stir-Fry, Rice, Noodles, and Special Lunch Menu. Drinks as well. Open Mon-Sat 11.30-15.30 and 18.00-21.30 (22.00 on Fri and Sat).
    48, Queens Road, Brighton. 01273-777412.
